A Vision from Four Years Ago—Now Shaping Portfolio Decisions in Real Time

Four years ago, I sketched out a vision for what portfolio strategy development could look like.

A single studio—interactive, responsive, and strategic—where we could shape and reshape our R&D portfolio in real time. With controls for investment decisions, business development, new modalities, and clinical trade-offs, directly connected to live forecasts of revenue, cost, timelines, risk, and value.

That drawing has been in the back of my head ever since. And now, with the new generation of Captario SUM, we are finally getting there.

With Next Gen SUM, we’ve brought together everything needed to make this kind of portfolio studio a reality:

🟢 Simulation speed that allows us to re-run a full portfolio scenario in seconds—even mid-meeting

🟢 Project generators to test pipeline strategies, from small molecules and gene therapies to in-licensed Phase 2 assets

🟢 Business development opportunities modeled as named assets or generators, so we can evaluate risk and value with clarity

🟢 Investment decisions modeled directly, enabling true option comparisons like delay, accelerate, or terminate

And it’s all in one place—no merging, no manual updates, no stitching together results after the fact.

This lets us tackle the real strategic questions head-on:

🟣 What would it take to meet our 2030 revenue or launch targets?

🟣 What modality mix gives us the best balance of innovation, speed, and risk?

🟣 What’s the portfolio impact if we remove projects X, Y, and Z?

Having this at our fingertips means we can explore and adjust strategy in real time. In the room, with stakeholders, with confidence.

It’s exciting to see this vision take shape—moving from a sketch on paper to something that’s now actively shaping decisions.
